Kyoto rewards an 8am temple and a slow Gion walk more than a third identikit matcha café. One climb, one pavilion, one grove.
Walk Fushimi Inari’s torii
Arrive early. The lower gates are the photograph; the mountain is the quiet. Do not block a working shrine path for a shot. Golden hour is the light.
Kinkaku-ji at opening
Gold leaf on still water. Bus groups arrive by 9:30am. This is a morning, not a squeeze after Arashiyama.
Arashiyama bamboo and Tenryu-ji
The grove is short and crowded by 10am. Tenryu-ji’s garden is the reason to stay in the west. Shojin-ryori nearby if you want a vegetarian Kyoto meal — ask for no dashi.
Gion at dusk
Hanamikoji Street. If you see a maiko, give space. This is a neighbourhood evening, not a hunt.
Ryoan-ji’s fifteen stones
Japan’s most famous dry garden. From any bench you see fourteen. Sit. Then Nishiki for pickles if you still have appetite.
