The Maldives lives up to every superlative applied to it. The water really is that colour — a turquoise so clear that the sandy bottom six metres down is plainly visible. The overwater villas really do have glass floors. The house reefs really do hold turtles, reef sharks, and, in the right atoll, whale sharks and manta rays. The sunset is a slow orange dissolve into the Indian Ocean, and it does not get old on night four.
This Maldives travel guide is for Indian travellers: a two-to-four-hour flight, a free visa on arrival, and two completely different trips in the same country — a private-island resort, or a local-island guesthouse on Maafushi, Dhigurah, or Thulusdhoo. The cards below open the focused guides.

Best Time to Visit the Maldives
Dry-season calms, monsoon discounts, and why manta months are not the same as villa-photo months.
Why Visit the Maldives?
The Maldives is consistently sold as the world’s top honeymoon destination — and the lagoon earns it. You step off a seaplane onto an island that is one hotel. The water is bath-warm. A house reef starts at the ladder. That combination is difficult to copy in Goa, Bali, or Phuket, however pretty the beach.
For travellers from India it is also one of the closest true luxury (or true-budget-reef) trips: two to four hours, no visa appointment, USD at the desk, and a choice between ₹93,000 local-island weeks and villa stays that start where a Japan trip ends. Pick the version on purpose. Mixing a cheap guesthouse with a USD 400 seaplane to a second atoll is how 7 days become logistics.
What is the Maldives Best Known For?
The Maldives is best known for overwater bungalows on turquoise lagoons, coral atolls (1,192 islands, 26 atolls), snorkelling and diving with turtles, reef sharks, manta rays and whale sharks, and a one-island-one-resort model that invented a certain kind of barefoot luxury. Bioluminescence on some beaches, including Vaadhoo, is the night version of the same water.
Beyond the villa photograph there are two Maldives. Resort islands are tax-free bubbles: alcohol, bikinis, a meal plan, a dive centre. Local islands since 2009 are real communities — modest dress, no alcohol in the village, guesthouses, the same ocean. Maafushi is the easiest of those. Dhigurah is the whale-shark one. Ignoring that split is how people overpay for a trip they would have loved on a bikini beach.
Two Maldives: Resorts vs Local Islands
Resort islands are private: Soneva Jani, Gili Lankanfushi, Coco Bodu Hithi, Dhigufaru, Meeru, Cinnamon Dhonveli — names at very different price points, all “one island, one hotel”. All-inclusive is usually the honest maths because there is nowhere else to eat.
Local islands — Maafushi (South Malé, 45 minutes), Dhigurah (South Ari), Thulusdhoo (surf), Fulidhoo (quiet) — run USD 40–120 rooms and USD 5–15 meals. You follow island rules. You still snorkel. A 7-day budget circuit from India is a real trip, not a consolation prize.
Maldivian Food, Mas Huni and Short Eats
Resort dining is expensive — a couple at an overwater restaurant often spends USD 100–200. Full board or all-inclusive tames that. On local islands, eat garudhiya (clear fish broth with rice, lime, chilli, onion), mas huni (tuna, coconut, onion, chilli with roshi) at breakfast, and hedhikaa (short eats) from tea houses for MVR 5–10. Yellowfin, reef fish, and lobster are the catch. Vegetarians will find more rice, coconut, and fruit than a North Indian thali — ask, and do not assume the “vegetable curry” is free of fish stock.
Where to Stay in the Maldives
Malé / Hulhumalé: a night when the seaplane cannot fly, or a culture morning — not the lagoon holiday. Skip the airport transit hotel if you can; a Hulhumalé guesthouse is kinder. North Malé Atoll: shortest speedboats, family resorts, surf and dive close to Velana. Maafushi: the default local-island base. Ari: whale sharks and Dhigurah, or a South Ari villa. Baa: UNESCO, mantas in season, honeymoon seaplanes. Book peak-season villas 6–12 months ahead.
Getting to the Maldives
IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Maldivian fly Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, and Chennai to Velana (MLE). About 2–3.5 hours. From the airport: speedboat if the atoll is close; seaplane if it is not (daylight only); domestic flight plus boat for Addu and the far north. Arrange the transfer with the resort or guesthouse before you land. A late arrival plus a Baa seaplane is a Malé overnight — plan it, do not discover it at baggage claim.
Do I Need a Visa for the Maldives?
Indian passport holders get a free 30-day visa on arrival. Carry a passport with six months’ validity, a return ticket, a confirmed booking, and proof of funds (often cited as about USD 100/day). No VFS appointment. Rules can change — check current immigration guidance before you fly, not a screenshot from last year.
Maldives Travel Tips
- Book the transfer with the room. Seaplanes and speedboats can add more than a night of the stay. Daylight-only seaplanes punish late arrivals.
- All-inclusive on remote resorts; room-only on local islands so you can eat in tea houses.
- Local-island rules: modest dress off the bikini beach, no alcohol in the village. Resorts are exempt.
- Bring a mask. Rental snorkels are often poor. Reef-safe sunscreen (no oxybenzone or octinoxate).
- USD cash for tips and small local-island buys. Cards at most resorts. Crisp notes help.
- Peak villas sell out 6–12 months ahead for December–January. Do not leave a honeymoon room to the last month.
- Plan your Maldives itinerary: use LokaTours to match villa, local island, or whale-shark week to the actual transfer times.
Maldives Travel FAQs
November to April for dry weather, calm seas, and visibility. Peak is December–March. May–October is wetter with resort discounts; Baa mantas typically May–November. South Ari whale sharks are year-round.
No — free 30-day visa on arrival at Velana. Passport, return ticket, booking confirmation, and proof of funds. No embassy queue.
Minimum three nights at a resort so the transfer is not half the trip. Five to seven days is the comfortable first visit. Local-island hops can fill seven nights without a seaplane.
Yes — Maafushi, Dhigurah, and Thulusdhoo guesthouses at USD 50–120, meals USD 5–15, snorkel boats USD 30–60. About ₹90,000–₹1,20,000 for seven days from India including flights.
Speedboat if you are close; seaplane if you are not (daylight only); domestic flight plus boat for the far atolls. Always confirm cost and last departure before you book the room.
Yes — South Ari Atoll year-round, especially from Dhigurah. Keep 3 metres. Never touch. Best odds in the Maldives, still not a promise.
About ₹93,000 local islands, ₹2,50,000 mid-range resort, ₹7,00,000+ luxury villa for seven days including flights. Transfers and meal plans swing the total.
Yes if you match the product: villa ladder and sandbank dinner, or local-island reef at a fifth of the price. The disappointment is usually the wrong Maldives, not the water.
