Best Time to Visit the Maldives

Two monsoons, year-round warmth and very different prices — here’s exactly when to go for the weather, the marine life and the best value.

The two seasons

The Maldives is warm all year at 28–31°C, but it has two monsoons. The dry north-east monsoon (December–April) brings sunshine, calm seas and the clearest lagoons — the answer to “best time to visit Maldives” for most travellers. The wet south-west monsoon (May–November) sees more rain and choppier water, but also lower prices and fewer crowds.

Peak season and prices

December to April is high season, peaking over Christmas, New Year and Indian holiday weeks when resort rates can double. Book overwater villas and seaplane transfers six to eight weeks ahead, and expect a festive surcharge over the year-end.

When the marine life appears

The wet season has a silver lining: plankton blooms draw manta rays and whale sharks. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll peaks June–November, while South Ari Atoll has whale sharks year-round. Divers often prefer the “shoulder” months of May and November.

Value vs weather

For guaranteed sunshine, come November–April. For a Maldives on a budget trip, the May–November green season offers the lowest guesthouse and resort rates — and rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day downpours.
