Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

Two monsoons, one small island — here’s exactly when to go to Sri Lanka, region by region, for the weather you want.

Calm tropical coastline with turquoise water in Sri Lanka

Two monsoons, two seasons

Sri Lanka’s quirk is that it has two opposing monsoons. The Yala (southwest) monsoon wets the west and south coasts and the hill country from roughly May to September, while the Maha (northeast) monsoon soaks the east and north from October to January. So at almost any time of year, somewhere on the island is dry.

The peak window: December to March

For most first trips, December to March is the answer — the west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa) and the Cultural Triangle are at their driest and sunniest. This is high season, so book beach hotels and the Ella train well ahead, especially over the December–January holidays.

When to choose the east coast

If you want the beaches of Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Nilaveli, flip the calendar: May to September is their dry, sunny season and prime surf time, while the west coast is wetter. Wildlife at Yala is also best in this February-to-June dry stretch.

What to pack

Pack for the tropics — light, breathable cotton, strong sun protection and a hat for the lowlands. Add a light jacket and long trousers for cool highland evenings in Nuwara Eliya and Ella, and a compact rain shell whatever the season, as showers can be brief and sudden.
