Crete is large enough to feel like its own country: Minoan ruins, a serious food culture, gorges, and beaches that rival the Cyclades without the same postcard crush. A car is the most useful way to link Chania or Heraklion with Balos and the hills. Four nights is the minimum for Knossos plus one beach and one town. A week lets you split east and west without rushing. Two nights from a cruise is a taste, not the island.

Crete Travel Tips

Why you want a car, where to sleep, and how not to miss lunch.

Knossos, Chania and the west

Knossos, just outside Heraklion, is the palace at the centre of Minoan myth — reconstructed in places, which is why the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion matters. Do both if you can: the site for the rooms, the museum for the artefacts. Chania’s Venetian harbour is the gentler overnight base than Heraklion for many visitors: lanes, tavernas, and west-coast access. Balos and Elafonisi are the swimming days from the west — turquoise water, early starts, parking and boats that fill by mid-morning in summer.

Food, gorges and how to explore

Crete’s olive oil, wild greens (horta), dakos, and Graviera are the reason to linger at lunch. Kolymvari and the west are famous for oil; every village taverna will argue theirs is better. Samaria Gorge is a full hiking day in season — start at dawn, carry water, and check whether the gorge is open (it closes in bad weather and for fire risk). Buses exist but a hire car unlocks gorges and quieter coves. Pair Crete with Athens on a 10–14 day Greece trip rather than squeezing it into a two-night ferry hop.

Getting here

Heraklion (HER) is the main airport; Chania (CHQ) suits the west. Night ferries from Piraeus save a hotel night. Distances on the island look small and take longer than you think — mountain roads, summer traffic, and a lunch that runs to 16:00. Do not plan Balos and Knossos on the same day.
