Crete is big and southern. Summer heat changes whether Samaria is a pleasure or a trial, and whether Balos is a postcard or a car park.

May–June

Hills still green, sea warming, gorges usually open. The strongest first choice for hiking and villages. Beaches are usable without August density.

September–October

Sea still warm, fewer coaches, and excellent weather for a 14-day Greece finish. October can still be beach weather in the south. Gorges are kinder than in August heat.

July–August

Hottest beaches and busiest Balos. Hike at dawn or skip the long gorge. The sea is at its best. Book cars and west-coast rooms ahead. Heraklion and Chania stay lively; mountain villages can feel shuttered at midday.

Winter

For towns, olive harvest landscapes, and archaeology — not a beach holiday. Some mountain roads and gorge trails close. Chania and Heraklion remain open.
