Venice is 118 islands, 400 bridges, and no cars for a thousand years. Two nights covers the Grand Canal, St Mark’s, and a cicchetti evening after the day-trippers leave. Three lets you add Murano and Burano. Arrive at Santa Lucia and you step onto the canal — the most dramatic train arrival in Europe. Go at 6–8am if you want Piazza San Marco without a cruise-ship crush.

Venice Travel Tips
Vaporetti, luggage on bridges, and where not to eat on the piazza.
Grand Canal, St Mark’s and the Doge’s Palace
Vaporetto Line 1 is the slow sightseeing bus down the palazzi. St Mark’s gold mosaics need a timed entry even when the basilica is free. The Doge’s Palace next door is the thousand-year government; the Secret Itineraries tour is the extra if you like prisons and hidden stairs. Piazza San Marco restaurants are the tourist trap — walk to Cannaregio or Dorsoduro for cicchetti.
Islands and evenings
Murano still blows glass. Burano is the colour. Torcello is nearly empty. A gondola is €80–100 for 30 minutes, split if you share — twilight, not noon. Acqua alta in late autumn can flood the piazza; pack shoes you can get wet.
Getting around
Walk and vaporetto. There is no taxi in the car sense. Luggage on bridges is real. Stay in Dorsoduro, Cannaregio, or Giudecca if you want a quieter night than San Marco.

Venice Travel FAQs
Two nights is the minimum so you see the city after day-trippers leave. Three nights adds Murano and Burano. A day trip is a sketch, not a visit.
April–June and September–October. February has Carnival. November–December can bring acqua alta. August is hot and crowded.
Yes — if you stay overnight and walk at dawn. The Grand Canal and the lagoon islands remain unlike anywhere else.
Cannaregio or Dorsoduro for cicchetti and fewer cruise crowds. Giudecca for canal views and a quieter night. San Marco if you accept the price and the noise.
No. A vaporetto on Line 1 is the Grand Canal done properly. A gondola is optional theatre at twilight.
