Hiroshima is the city that asks you to slow down: the Peace Memorial Museum, the A-bomb Dome, and a park that is not a selfie stop. Pair it with Miyajima’s floating torii at high tide. One long day from Osaka works; an overnight is kinder so the museum is not a sprint before a 4pm Shinkansen. This is the western end of the classic first Japan circuit.

Hiroshima Travel Tips

Museum timing, tide charts, and JR ferry on the pass.

Peace Memorial Park and the museum

The museum is the most moving interior most travellers will visit in Japan — allow two unhurried hours. The A-bomb Dome stands as it stood. The park is for walking, not for rushing to the ferry. Photography inside the museum follows posted rules. This is not a box to tick between okonomiyaki and a train.

Miyajima and the floating torii

Ferry about 30 minutes from Hiroshima. Itsukushima Shrine’s torii appears to float at high tide — check the tide table, not a postcard. Deer roam the island (related to Nara’s). Mt Misen is the hike if you have a full afternoon. Do not stack a rushed museum morning with a sunset you will miss because of the last ferry.

Getting in

Shinkansen from Osaka about 90 minutes on Hikari or Sakura (JR Pass). Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is layered with noodles — different from Osaka’s. Stay near the station or the park if you overnight. Return to Osaka or Tokyo the same evening only if the museum started at opening.

Hiroshima Travel FAQs

One full day covers the Peace Memorial and Miyajima if you start early. An overnight is better. A two-hour museum raid from Osaka is too little.

Spring and autumn for walking weather and Miyajima tides without peak humidity. The museum is year-round. Check high tide for the floating torii.

Yes — about 90 minutes on the Shinkansen. Start at opening, museum first, ferry to Miyajima, last trains back. An overnight is less brittle.

No — a modest entry fee. Book or queue at opening. Allow two hours. The park and Dome exterior are free.

At high tide. Low tide is mud and a walk to the gate. Check a tide chart the night before, not the postcard you already saved.
